Ear, eye and skin condition diagnosis and treatment

Ears
Ear infections in dogs and cats are common and many will experience this condition sometime in their life. Scratching and rubbing at the ear(s) and head shaking are common signs. You may also notice an abnormal odor from the ear or see redness or swelling. Many ear problems are caused by allergies that have secondary bacterial and yeast infections. Treatment for ear infections includes cleaning of the ear along with topical medication. Depending upon the severity of the ear problem, additional medication will be given. Prevention in some cases can be as simple as routine cleaning of the ear. Animals with recurrent allergies may need to be treated on a periodic basis.

In Home Pet Vet provides Home Care Services for animals that need routine cleaning or those animals that are challenging to clean their ears.

Eyes
Common eye problems include infections, cataracts, corneal damage, glaucoma, and eyelid growths. Treatment will be determined by the type of problem but could include eye ointments and surgery to remove growth. Some conditions will need the care of an eye specialist. If you suspect a problem with your pet’s eyes, please contact your veterinary immediately.

Skin
Itchy skin disorders can be cause by allergies, mange conditions, fleas, and food sensitivities. Hair loss can be associated with hormonal problems, psychogenic disorders and fungal infections. Treatment is targeted at the cause and can include topical and oral medications. Allergy testing and treatment can be used to help prevent some allergic disorders, especially those that are chronic and/or severe.
